                Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal is a saint with a different kind of ideology. He has shown the way to use modern scientific techniques for the promotion of moral values and to the benefit of humanity. He advocates the idea that we should take benefit of modern techniques while maintaining our rich cultural and moral heritage. Use of new education for the welfare of man is need of the hour.

In the light of the Gurbani's saying that “Contemplate and reflect upon knowledge, and you will become a benefactor to others.”(SGGS, p. 359), he believes that education is true education only if it used for the welfare of others. Generosity is the crux of all religions as well as the aim of all knowledge and science. Generosity is warp and woof of Baba Ji's philosophy. It is the basic inspiration behind all his work, whether it is construction of roads, or cleaning of the Holy Bein, or spread of education. Maybe it is because of his recognition of generosity as the true aim of education and his adoption of it in his life that Punjabi University has honoured him with the highest academic degree, D.Litt.

In today's world, it is due to its segregation from this important purpose of generosity that it has got commercialized and modern technical education having become too expensive; it has gone beyond the reach of the poor and the needy. It is in fact the poor sections of society who are living in the darkness of illiteracy that need education and knowledge the most, but it is not reaching them. If we want to develop our country and society in the real sense, we will have to take the light of education to huts and cottages of the poor. It is taking this aim in mind that Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has opened in many educationally and economically backward areas of Punjab such educational institutions where advanced technical education is being provided to the needy at a very low cost. A Senior Secondary School, a Postgraduate College at Seechewal, a middle school at Gallowal, a technical research centre and Nawan Nanakana School at Sultanpur Lodhi are parts of the same series.

Having been established by Sant Seechewal on Dec. 15, 2005, Nawan Nanakana Charitable School Sultanpur Lodhi is an educational institutional with a difference. Firstly, this school has emerged out of a feeling of sympathy and affection for the children of those poor migrant labourers who have come to Punjab from backward states in search of bread & butter. Sant Seechewal felt that we are the followers of the great prophet Guru Nanak Dev Ji who cherished vision of welfare of all and  presented mercy as the foundation of all religion.

If the poor people have to live miserably along the roads in this manner in Guru Nanak Dev's own town, what can be more disgraceful for us? Sant Seechewal is of the opinion that for all-round development of a backward section of society we must make it aware of itself and its situation. Only education can be the best medium for this. Education is the third eye of man which gives him this awareness. Thus, education is the first requirement for the eradication of curse of poverty.

Secondly, Sant Seechewal observed that earning daily bread is the main concern of the people living in utter poverty. For them, neither present nor future has any meaning beyond this. Rotting uncared by roadsides, their children are being prepared for life of helplessness similar to their own. They have neither awareness nor means to bring their children out of this vicious circle. They are unable to give even sufficient food to their children, providing good clothes and books and  sending them to school is entirely a far cry. Thus, the desire to see their children getting education does not arise at all, or it lies suppressed in the mind. Sant Seechewal had to face this problem at the beginning. Making the parents aware about the future of their children and providing books, stationery and uniforms to free the parents from extra economic burden were the initial tasks which Sant Seechewal had to do constantly from the beginning of this school till date.

Thirdly, for filling the self-confidence in somebody, it is necessary that he be made aware of what free and decent life is. For this purpose, Sant Seechewal created in these poor people a desire to live with self-confidence. He did not only provide their children uniforms and clothes, but also soap and oil so that they might wash themselves and their clothes before they come to school. With this, a desire of clean and decent life started developing in them and their children and they became more conscious about themselves.

Moreover, the teachers for teaching these children in their mother language were arranged from among the educated migrant labourers. This made teaching process easier and the children did not feel inferiority complex which children experience when they are taught in language other than month tongue. Apart from other subjects of science and humanities, Sanskrit is also being taught. Being taught very efficient teacher of different subjects, the children are showing very good performance. The children who erstwhile were rotting by the roadsides are now on the move busy building up their bright future.

Apart from studying according to syllabi of Punjab School Education Board, the children in this school are also learning computer education and skills such computer designing. For this purpose a separate computer lab has been established where 10 computers are provided for the children. With a view to make them self independent they are given special opportunities at Sant Avtar Singh Technical Research Centre Sultanpur Lodhi to learn practical and technical skills such welding, lathe turning, driving, and masonry and other skills. Special arrangement has been made to teach girls the art of sewing and embroidering. In this manner children are being prepared as self dependent and useful citizens.

Arrangements are also made for participation of students in sports. Sports teams of this school take part in contests at Seechewal, Sultanpur Lodhi and other places. School Gatka team is worth special mention. For the students, cultural, religious and academic functions are also organized. On the occasion of anniversary of the kar sewa of Holy Bein, poetical recitation, elocution, song, essay-writing and painting contests are held in which children of Nawan Nanakana School every year bring laurels to their school.

Studying in the pleasant and pious surroundings of the Holy Bein banks, the children become clean hearted. Taking part in sewa activities at Nirmal Kuteya from time to time, the children get moral and religious education as well. Children and staff also avail themselves of opportunity of serving guru ka langar which is always ready in the service of sangat. The Gurbani is also taught in the school.

At present, about 250 children who are studying in different classes of this school are being taught by 10 local or migrant teachers very efficiently. At the beginning the classes were met in the open on the banks of Holy Bein. But in 2008, Sant Seechewal got a beautiful 10-room building constructed for the school which was inaugurated by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India, on his second visit to Sultanpur Lodhi.

To relieve some financial burden on these labourer families, free food is being provided to the children. Clothes according to all the seasons of the year are also given to the students free of cost. All this is done for the reason that these children should not be devoid of education at any rate. The NRI and Indian Punjabis are always ready to contribute wholeheartedly in this venture.

Although Nawan Nanakana Charitable School is still in its infancy yet it has created a conspicuous space for itself in the sphere of education extension due to its healthy moral values and sense of generosity. It can be hoped that, being situated in this historical town of Guru Sahib this institution will remain a means and example of spreading Guru Ji's humanitarian philosophy in practice.
