History of Sultanpur Lodhi

Among ancient civilization most of these in India. Sindhu Ghatti, Harrapa civilization, Roman Rule, Egypt civilization, Venus and British Empire have originated on the shores of rivers. In Sikh, Hindu, Muslim, Budha, Christianity etc. religions, water has been considered the main feature of life. Life without water can’t be imagined, as all the living things in the universe contains 75% of water.

 All religions have given great respect to the water. The Hindu, Sikhs, Muslim, Christians, Bodhi’s, Parsis and other religions of the world, whereas have considered the water most pious, there it has been compared with the life also. meaning life is possible only with water. In this world when the history of life was thoroughly searched it came to limelight that when the life had its first heartbeat it had started first time from the water, life can’t imagined without water even for a moment, so, for these reason it is said that beauty of the earth’s secret exists in water. on the any part of the earth where is no water there none type of life can be imagined,

A great source of water, holy kali bein flowing on average speed, many towns are inhabited on its banks. Among these historic pious city Sultanpur Lodhi has an important place in the world. according to the historians this holy city is inhabited on the banks of Holy Kali Bien before 1st century, has become carcasses (Khandhar) and even its remains (symptoms) are in dangers. During Hindu rule this town was part of Traigart Rule. This city is also mentioned in the Mahanbharata. This city has been also the centre of Budh religion after Hindu rule. After it this city was under the rule of Turks. during this here the business flourished greatly. Mehmood Gajnawi had burnt Sarvmaupur due to which this city was completely destroyed. After it this city was established under the Mughal Empire under the Muslim rule. 


Founder of the Sikh religion Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji had visited her sister Bebe Nanki who lived at Sultanpur Lodhi. He lived  here much of his life time, 14 years 9 months and 13 days and he did austerity on the banks of Holy Kali Bein during his stay at Sultanpur Lodhi. One day Guru Nanak Dev ji dived in the Holy Kali Bein and remaining eloped for 3 days, emerged from the place of Gurdwara Sant Ghat and pronounced “Dhur Ki Bani”. He for the welfare of Society had undertook four pilgrimages (Udasian) starting from Sultanpur Lodhi. Area of Sultanpur Lodhi has always been prosperous religiously, economically and socially. Here religious places of every religion has been made and people of all religions are living here. This city has to bear many political cruelaties. The lifeline of this area called Holy Kali Bien had to suffer due to contaminated waters of hundred villages and cities being put in it and the feelings of Sangats had been on the stake. It was straight forward playing with their feelings.

 July 2000 on the occasion of Sangrand of the month of Sawan, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal after praying at Gurdwara Ber Sahib in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib, took the command of cleaning the Holy Kali Bein. This great karsewa day by day established many milestones.

   In year 2003 Karsewa of Holy Kali Bein was started from the place of its origin. This Holy Kali Bein starts from village Dhanoa. Due to diminish of Bein 6000 acres land of this area was affected due to Sem and more area was coming under the effect of Sem. The Farmers were badly affected economically. While harvesting the paddy crops famers had to place beds(Manje) in the fields.

   The people of this area were forced to sell their lands. In May 2003 Sant Seechewal started the Karsewa from this area. With this karsewa Sem in this area was finished and crops begin to to grow. The farmers began to handle their homely affairs properly. With this good change where the picture of the area changed, there the destiny of the people also changed. Crops in the fields started flourishing.

   17th August 2006 became a historic day in the Karsewa of Baba Nanak’s Holy Kali Bein as the president of India Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam reached at Nirmal Kuteya Sultanpur Lodhi and he saw with his own eyes that how Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal with the co-operation of Sangats has rejuvenated the dead historic Holy Kali Bein. In july 2007 another page was added to to the history of karsewa when from Shri Akal Takhat Sahib a message was issued, telling the religious importance of Kali Bein. In July 2008 Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam again visited the Holy Kali Bein and took the message of the effects of this Karsewa to the whole world in his speeches.

   After the karsewa the Holy Kali Bein due to its new beautiful look has become a living example to save the other natural resources of water in the world. Flow of pure water in the Holy Kali Bien and different type of fruitful trees planted on its banks and different species of birds and aquatic animals and daily visiting tourists in hundreds from India and Abroad are increasing the honour of the pious city. Along with Karsewa of bein works of making the city clean and tidy and lush green, these works are continuously being done by Sant Seechewal. Contaminated waters of Sultanpur Lodhi after treating at treatment plant is being used for agriculture purpose in the area of 8 km through pipelines installed for this purpose. Construction of bathing Ghats on the banks of Bein behind Gurdwara Ber Sahib had added to the beauty of the Holy Kali Bein, more pages will go on adding to the history of Holy Kali Bein with the blessings of Waheguru.

In 2017 the nation has honoured Sant Seechewal Ji with ‘Padma Shree’ Award acknowledging his works of Public welfare. Sant Seechewal Ji has dedicated this award to the Sangats for their day night services.


There is a need to maintain the holiness of the city.

  Sultanpur Lodhi, Shree Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s feet touched city is considered a great pilgrimage place for the Sikh religion. The Punjab Govt. has proclaimed it a pious city. Municipal co-operation requires lot of funds for the Modern type of Machinery for the cleanliness of the city. There is a big need to install Sewage pipes for the disposal of rain waters and sewage waters. Toilets for the tourists at different places should be made. Parking for the tourists is a big problem, disposal of solid waste and there is a need to increase the capacity of the existing treatment plant. Main roads of the city and leading roads to the Guru Ghars should be beautified so that Guru Nanak name reciting sangats could rejoice this holy city.
